Beithíoch: new track from forthcoming release

Beithíoch have uploaded a new track to preview an upcoming mini album.

The release will consist of substantially updated versions of tracks that are already out in the world but were never quite finished to a level I was 100% satisfied with, until now. It should give you a bit of a sense where the work for the new album is going also – ie. denser arrangements, more epic and varied.

The new album from Irish black metallers Beithíoch, is available now – complete and free – from “Dúchas” translates roughly to “instinct”, or “that which is native”, and is inspired by the glacier-torn landscape of Ireland’s north.

stylistically this album throws up a few surprises: much of it moves away from the droney, minimalist style of the debut album (and subsequent EP) towards a sound that has more melodic intricacies and more subtleties in the arrangements. At times this album flirts with an old school doom/death sound whilst at other moments hearkens more to early Gorgoroth, Ancient or Immortal. More importantly though, this album is a serious challenge to the staleness and mediocrity of modern metal.

Metal and Medieval music

Comparison #1:
Machaut – Gloria from The nostre dame mass
Timeghoul – Boiling in the Hourglass

Comparison #2:
Kyrie from The Templar’s Chant
Black Sabbath – Sabbath Bloody Sabbath

After this, […] present the Kyrie chant, whose liturgical function, at the beginning of the Mass, is to exalt divine majesty, the only force capable of remedying the weaknesses and imperfections of the human soul. Once a year, the Kyrie was sung outside the Mass, to open Vespers for Easter Day. […] But the Kyrie could also be employed to fortify the souls of the combatants when an army deployed in order of battle.

There are superficial reasons why metal compares so much to medieval music, to do with the lineage of the musical language it uses (metal started when Sabbath starting imitating horror movie music clichés – which themselves relied on a lot of ‘medievally’ sounding devices, because they sound ‘creepy’ to modern ears). More fundamentally, metal shares a dark but reverent worldview and mythic/allegoric way of describing life which is much more at home in the ancient world than it is modernity.
